There was no doubting Micky’s success now. The fans loved him and he himself was getting a buzz out of performing for audiences of such vast numbers. This was what he had worked so hard to achieve and he was enjoying every second of it.

‘Am I successful? I think you measure your success by the people standing in front of you at a gig,’ he admitted to the Bristol Post the following spring. ‘When you start out playing to 20 people above a pub and then suddenly you’re walking out to the Lyric Theatre to 1,000 people, that’s special and that’s your success.’

And it wasn’t just the fans wanting a piece of the forty-eight-year-old either. TV bosses were keen to book Micky after his successful Royal Variety Performance and on 16 December, he went along to the London Studios in Waterloo to film a special Christmas edition of the longest-running satirical panel shows on TV, Have I Got News For You. In 2011 the series received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Comedy Awards, the first time the honour had been bestowed on a programme rather than an individual.

Ian Hislop and Paul Merton have been on the panel since the show started in 1990 and each week are joined by a guest to have fun with the news topics of the week. Each episode takes over an hour to film. The audience filed into studio 2, the second largest of the studio centre, and took their seats, waiting for the panel to arrive. Alexander Armstrong was the guest host for the evening (he currently holds the record for the most appearances as guest presenter), while Ross Noble would be joining Ian Hislop’s team for the show. Ross also holds the record for the most number of times a guest has been on the show, so it was just Micky who was the newbie for this special festive edition. Not that you would have realised. The set was decorated with tinsel and the background newspapers behind the panelists were decorated with Christmas graffiti. All panelists and the host were in special Christmas jumpers for the recording, with Ian jokingly telling the audience while they were having their microphones wired up that ‘they were allowed to choose their own clothes this evening’.

Micky had just had a haircut for the show and sat next to Paul Merton in a green jumper with a snowman on the front. All ‘contestants’ were decorated with woollen elves, reindeer, etc. Alexander made the introductions and described Micky as ‘A comedian who went down a storm at the Royal Variety Performance and Prince Charles wet himself… on the way there. Please welcome Micky Flanagan!’

The first topic of discussion was the Royal Variety Performance and the violent demonstration that occurred beforehand and Micky made a joke straight away that Camilla was obviously ‘well trained not to have bolted when she was poked with a stick.’ It got the audience laughing and he visibly relaxed.

The show was a success and over 2 million viewers tuned in to watch episode 10 of series 40.
